Rabindranath was born at Jorasanko on 7 May 1861, when his mother was 37 and father was 44. He was the fourteenth child among 15 children of Devendranath. The first one was a female and died after birth. Rabindranath was 21 years younger than his eldest brother Dwijendranath (1840 - 1926),19 years from Satyendranath (1842-1923), 17 years from Hemendranath (1844-1884), 16 years from Birendranath and 2 years from Somendranath (1859-1922). Devendranath (1817-1955) survived upto 88 years and Soudamoni (1821-1875) survived only 54 years. Among the children of Devendranath survival of some were earlier e.g.,Hemendranath (40 yrs), Sukumari (14yrs), Punyendranath (5yrs), Budhendra (1yr) and the survival of the others were above 60 e.g. Dwijendranath (86yrs), Satyendanath (81 yrs), Birendranath (70yrs), Soudamini (73 (yrs), Jyotirindranath (76yrs),Saratkumari(66yrs), Swaranakumari (76 yrs), Barnakumari (90 yrs), Somendranath (63 yrs), and Rabindranath (80 yrs).
