In England-Rabindranath at 18

Monument in Gordon square where he studied in London
In the first part of Jan 1879 Rabindranath left Brighton  with Tarak Nath Palit and came to London, He took  a house on rent and lived alone. . After some time  he went to the house of Mr. Burker and lived with his family. While staying in London he visited the House of Commons for two days. The date in which he first went there was 23rd May 1879. Mr. O'donnel , a Irish member, spoke against the Press-act. Rabindranath said that he could not find a good number of visitors in Diplomatic gallery.
From spring season to the (Rabindranath Tagore monument in Gordon Square - Early life of Rabindranath Tagore ) summer, a few days, London becomes filled with different cultural activities like theater, dance, song etc.  Though he came to London for sitting in Civil Service exam. or Barrister, he wanted to see the life of the English people from distance without mixing with them.He portraited the society of the English people.
However, he left London and went to Tunbridge Wells within Kent county, a village . Satyendranath and Jnanadanandini were along with him.
He was exhausted to live in smoke-filled London and became satisfied after coming to a village .
Jnanadanandini wrote in her Memoirs about Tunbridge wells. It was summer when Rabindranath came to Tunbridge Wells. But the weather here was not soothing and he went to Torquary , Devenshire at the call of Jnanadanandini.
Here he wrote a poetry, Bhagna Tari published in Bharati,in Asharh issue.
Rabindranath came back to London for his exam. in Jun 1879 and remained in the house of Dr. Mr. Scott who  had four daughters, two sons,  three servants, and a dog, named Toby. The elder son Mr N was serving in an office and was engaged with a Miss J and 3rd daughter Miss A fled away to a relative's house in afraid of the arrival of an Indian and did not return in a week.. They returned after a week and when Miss J remarked that one could not look to her face for two days.
Rabindranath was really happy to live in a family atmosphere. Rabindranath wrote. " Within  few days, I became their family member. "
Taraknath Palit brought him from Jnanadaanandini to make him free from Family disturbances but here he was mixed up  in a close family relationship.  The quality Mrs. Scott had was her respect to her husband. Rabindranath wrote, "We used to say  and I too believed that the respect an Indian wife kept to her husband is rare in Europe."  The natural ending of love of one female to one she loves is her respect to the respective person.
After few months in the family of Dr. Scott, Rabindranath was admitted in the Faculty of Arts and Laws of  University College, London on 13th Nov 1879 at the initiative of Tarak Nath Palit when Rabindranath was 18.
It was not known how older his eldest daughter Miss K was than Rabindranath. Her relation with Rabindranath was formal and that of Miss J and Miss A was close. Though there were three maid servants , they used to do the necessary domestic work. Miss J do dusting of the furniture in the drawing room everyday and in her leisure time read Green;s History of the English people.Miss A do stitching of pillow cover, sitting cloth, shocks, clothes etc., do netting with woolen thread for son of his brother. She is the only singer and do singing with instruments. Apart from this they do all the social formalities, have evening walk with all the members. In the night after dinner they used to sit by the fire, do gossiping and singing. Rabindranath began to learn many English tunes. Miss A taught him how to play piano and taught many songs. But most of the days they were engaged in studying. They studied the relationship between man and literature.
Henry Morley (1822-94) was the teacher of Rabindranath in English literature.
Henry Morley (15 September 1822 – 1894) was an English academic who was one of the earliest professors of English literature in Great Britain. Morley wrote a popular book containing biographies of famous English writers.
Rabindranath maintained deep regards to him through out his life. He wrote, "I was then admitted in London University. Henry Morley was teaching us English literature. That was not the rotten goods supplied from the text book.Literature was in his heart which got life in his sweet voice and which touched our heart, to satisfy fully our hunger without any loss by the middle man during  his delivery.
The famous geologist Pramatha nath Basu (1855-1935) opened a class for Civil Service examinee of Indian Students . Rabindranath joined this tutorial at the  end of 1879 or beginning of 1880.

Rabindranath in England

Rabindranath came to London from Paris on 10th Oct, 1878. He started from India to England on 20th Sept, 1878. He stayed there for 2/3 hours and then started for Brighton from London.
Jnanadanandini with his son, Surendranath, and daughter, Indira,  stayed there in the Sassex County south of England and near to the sea-shore. Rabindranath became astonished to see the railways of England. He saw that trains go from the right, from left, from the top and from the bottom. On seeing this he remembered the people of London going in a hurry this way , that way and from every ways. As if they don't have any time to spare.
Rabindranath wrote about the residence at Brighton, "Our house at Brighton is near the sea. 20/25 houses stand in rows and the name of the complex is Medina Villas. When I first heard that we would be living in Medina Villas, I imagined a lot such as there are gardens, big big trees, flowers , fruits, open space and lakes etc. After coming to my place I found houses, roads, cars horses and no sign of Villas. In comparing with ours the houses here are big in length and breadth but their heights are low.
Rabindranath was first introduced with Surendranath and Indira. He wrote that the children became astonished to see his English pronunciation. Indiradebi said that he had peculiar tricks to please the children. He used to sing in a funny way.
Later, Rabindranath wrote about the life of Brighton, "When I reached England , it was middle of October. Cold has not set in. We were in Brighton. Sun still shining there. We along with children are moving here and there on the sea shore. We had walking time at 11 am.when the sun is above . He wrote , " I have not to learn how to mix up with the people here as I have contact with those who stayed here for long time.
He was admitted in a public school at Brighton. But after inquiry it was found that it was not true. He was admitted in a day school and not a public school. Though the students behaved with him heartily , his stay in the school did not last long. He was brought to London in Jan 1879
Rabindranath came to England in the last week of Oct 1878, he was admitted in school at the beginning of Nov. He came to London in Jan 1879.   His school life did not last more than two months.
Rabindranath knew England through literature. He thought that this three ft wide country would be full of Music  of Tennyson.Where he stays in this three ft wide land he would hear lecture of Gladstone, explanation of Veda  by Maxmuller, scientific theories of Tindal, deep thought of Karlylre, Philosophy of Benn .
Rabindranath wanted to hear and learn English tunes. Tarak nath Palit, boyhood friend of Satyendranath  was there for imparting education to his children. He thought that it would be misuse of staying at Brighton Rabindranath should be brought to London. He consulted with Satyendranath and brought him in London and kept him alone in a hired house. Rabindranath said that the house was in front of Regent Park.
While staying there he was given lesson in Latin. From this place he was brought to the house of Mr.Burker, member of a family of  Pandit in Greek and Latin.  Once he was a clergyman, always busy , the half-old teacher was fretful and his wife was a well behaved gentle lady. This childless couple was not one in mind So a suppressed unpleasant situation was existing between them. Mrs. Burker took care of Rabindranath and loved a dog named Tiny. For this she extended her area of pain. Because when Mr.Burker wanted to punish her , he punished  the dog..
There was another Burker who could make student pass the entrance  examination. Rabindranath took lesson from him in history with the help of  "Greens history of the English pupil "
An important incident took place in the life of Rabindranath in 1879.i.e.,publication of Kabikahini in the form of a book. This was the first publication of Rabindranath in the form of a book.
Rabindranath said with respect to this book, "Kabikahini Kabya is the first book published among all my writings. When I was in Ahmedabad, Mejdada's place, One of my enthusiastic friend printed the book send to me and make me astonished. .."

Timeline of Rabitalent (cont-2)

The most important incident in the life Rabindranath in the year 1284 [1877-78] was the publication of Bharati.
Tattwabodhini was a magazine published from  the Tagore family and some articles of Rabindranath was published but this could not fulfill the aspirations of Rabindranath as it was not possible for becoming a literature-magazine.
In Bengali the best literature magazine at that time was Bangadarshan of Bankim Chandra. Following that Jnananur, Aryadarsan, Bandhab, Pratibimba were published subsequently. But their life span was very limited. Bangadarsan of Bankim Chandra stopped publishing after four years of publication. Sanjib Chandra Chattopadhyay republished it  but it could not regain the previous prestige. Pratibimba after a few months amalgamated with Jnanankur to be vanished within few days. Bhramar lived for only one year three months.Bandhab after its irregular publication wiped out from the market again repubishe in 1285. Atmadarsan was irregular in publication.
Jyotiridranath on the occasion of 40th birth anniversary of Bharati,
" The room  where I used to sit on the 2nd floor contained a round table round which some chairs were arranged. On the opposite side of the wall there was a piano placed by the side of the wall.y condstant companion Rabi [ the young poet was not world famous at that time] another poet Akshay , my boyhood friend, used to come there and we took our seats round the table. We enjoyed in many gossips, readings of  poems , singing of many songs , creation of lyrics, ..."
Jyotirindranath founded a magazine for two poets Rabindranathy and akshy chandra Choudhury. Dwijendranath became the editor of the magazine.
